It is disgusting and my thoughts are with you.

Stay strong us Brits will come through this.

Yes Rose, I agree, seeing all this on the television is absolutely terrible you just wonder what the world is coming to these days, one thing after another.

Hi Rose, here in London its been very bad. My local area hasnt been too bad so far, we did hear that our local shopping centre was hit, but today it was ok. They are closing at 4pm today to be safe. So many areas have had lots of damage and so many shops have been broken into etc. I hope that it doesnt spread to other areas, but my daughter's friend in Nottingham said its started there now too. I hope tonight brings better news and no more fires and break ins etc

I had a scary journey home from Southampton last night.

As our train left Leamington the guard (as that's what they are, not whatever they're calling them this week!) announced there were problems in Brum, I'd been keeping tabs on twitter since I left Reading on the problems. and our own Helly helped me find out beforehand about the lockdown at New Street. A young man who was across the aisle from me, who had got on at Oxford with a bit of an aggressive attitude turned to me ashen faced and asked what was happening. The poor chap literally turned into a boy before my eyes "what am I going to do" he asked. I let him use my mobile so he could phone his parents to meet him at one of the suburban stations instead of New Street.

All exits from New St Station locked down except the glass doors. no taxi's being allowed into the city, no buses either. Station unusually deserted for time of day apart from the noticeably visible police presence. Eventually I caught train to Kings Norton, and I couldn't get a taxi home from there either, streets eerily quiet. had to wait for a bus then a long walk from the nearest stop back home, streets here too were eerily quiet, and I headed home as quick as I could.

it's terrible what is going on, but I'd hate to think that all young people get tarred with the same brush as this tiny minority causing this devastation.

my thoughts are with everyone, no matter where they are, that they stay safe!!

Jo

Your experience last night sounds awful. I hope things will be ok tonight and every other night for that matter.

Thinking of all of you who may be in the affected areas.

I live in Telford in Shropshire and we have heard that there is a pre-planned English Defence League protest happening on Saturday just up the road from where I live. Our local council tried to get it banned but the Police said they would allow it. Even before this happened we were wondering if this might cause trouble and now we are wondering if the Police may now be regretting their decision. Now we are all scared stiff that something might erupt. We have heard rumours that 600 people from another area hundreds of miles away are planning to turn up. I just hope it is rumours.

Hi Rosie
Thanks for starting this line. I can't get my head round all this. I don't wish R.A. on anyone but
I do wonder what would happen if these (people) realised the effect on their neighbourhoods.
If money has to be spent on all this where will the NHS get extra funds for the future. Sorry will stop
now but must give all support for police and fire services.
Take care everyone but don't let the blighters beat us

Thanks for starting this thread Rose, it really is a very scary time. With the availability of the internet and particularly Facebook and Twitter (neither of which I can get my head round!) word travels fast and these groups of rioters just seem to spring up all over the place at a moments notice. I was listening to an interview earlier with some teenage girls who were drinking wine looted from some store, they thought the whole thing was fun! When asked if they expected the rioting to continue this evening they said they hoped so and went on to blame it all on the government!

What I don't get (which is all of it really!) is why trash your own neighbourhood? Duh Confused, it's like weeing on your own chips!

Sad times Sad Stay safe my friends,

I heard a comment on this mornings radio that well just says it all.

A looter was interviewed in Manchester and asked why he was doing it.........

I'm not going to miss this opportunity to get all of these things for free. What will they do if they catch us? The prisons are full up and anyway it will be me first offense and all I will get will be an ASBO and I can live with that, so I will keep doing it till I get caught.

I think its about time they bought back public flogging.

I find it hard to comment on the "Disorder", not least because as a Special Constable for the Metropolitan Police we are told throughout our training at Hendon that we should not tell people what we do in our spare time - as it just results in lots of awkward questions about dodgy divorces and neighbours who insist on parking across your driveway etc - but I think today is as good a day as any to lift off my mask so to speak (topical?)

I left work here at NRAS last night and went straight to my Borough where I found that I could not get in to the locker room for bodies, there were 25 Special Constables out of a total of 70 that are currently operational on our Borough at any one time. We worked a night shift with the operational team on duty offering high visibility patrols all over the Borough, concentrating on each and every high street and shopping arcade on and near to us. At times there seemed to be more officers on the streets than pedestrians - however, the continuation of this operational plan for the rest of the week should, you would hope, change the atmosphere somewhat. The extra measures that are now in place across London to give police additional powers make a huge difference on the ground. I stopped one young lad on a bike and searched him at about 11.30pm only to be told I was the 9th officer to do so – to which I replied “why don’t you go home then before you get around the corner and meet the 10th?”

Anyway, I’m waffling, but I just wanted to speak up for the wider policing community and let you know that we are all working to the very best of our abilities, in whatever small way that we can, to help resolve this situation. I’m leaving here at 5.30 and reporting for duty at 7pm again tonight for starters......

Thanks Katy you are doing a good job.

I live a 15 minute drive away from the centre of Manchester. I also have two young people at home who both watched the news on tv and were disgusted by the behaviour in Manchester last night. Manchester council have worked hard to transform the city after the ira bomb in 96 and it was terrible to see people trashing it.

I think everyone here will commend you on what must be a very difficult and frustrating role , and also a very rewarding one .. knowing that your presence has averted more of this outrageous criminal behaviour.( because that's what it is !).

Even here in Gravesend , we saw shops and offices close at 3.30pm in the town centre and a huge Police presence , which is the reason why there were only 5 arrests apparently .

Again Thanks for being part of this .:)

What sad times these are.. I feel so down about the whole thing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Katy . I'm full of admiration for the very difficult task the police are facing and I'm fed up with them being blamed for events.

I fully appreciate what the police are having to do.
I sometimes wonder if we were still in the dark ages, without television, internet, Facebook etc, would there have been so many copycat riotings and lootings? I think not.
Did you see the father of one of the young men killed in the hit and run incident? He was marvellous, and he told a crowd to stop it right now and grow up.

It must be so scary to be where it's happening, may you all have a ring of safety round you.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Katy - I fully applaude the police in what they are trying to deal with. My Step Sister is on the front line so I am getting a first hand account.

The EDL march in Telford is still going ahead on Saturday. It is taking place in a small part of Telford called Wellington (the original market town before Telford was built around it.). It is now a struggling small market/shop community much loved by the older generation (including myself) who do not like going to the big Town Centre more than is necessary. Most of Wellington is not opening this Saturday, they have opted to board up and stay shut. The local car dealer is moving his car stock off the premises because of probable damage. The local football match has had to be put back several hours (if it take place at all) and all the pubs are being told to stay closed until they are told they can open. We have a very large community of ethnic minority (majority) and most of the time we all live beside each other peacefully. God knows what will happen on Saturday and I can only pray that for the sake of our community that it passes without the trouble that we are now all imagining/expecting.

Hi

At the moment Southampton has been spared.

I think the riots are dreadful, mindless and horrific. The fear and horrible lawless disregard... those people in the flats over the shops... *shudder* attempted murder to my mind!

but Oh! I can see how its happened- there is a whole group of totally disengaged youth who are into gangs from very very young.

Completely abandoned by their parents, where the state leaves them to rot (and has done for many years)...

http://www.kidsco.org.uk/

Leave school or are excluded as they are unable to behave appropriately and leave without an education as you have to have parents with wherewithall to appeal for 2-3 yrs for a statement..

http://www.ipsea.org.uk/

So as communities we abandon them. The gangs find a use for them...

Horrendous violence and poor choices with complete disrespect for authorities and no consequences understanding follows.

We MUST do something in our communities about these problems.

I am also concerned that the riots have caused parliament to be recalled etc and this sends a signal that if you want action- RIOT- bearing in mind the current economic climate, this is very worrying indeed...

Jenni

PS Julie, hate to disagree but being a bit of a history buff- riots are a bit of a British History pastime...http://www.york.ac.uk/ipup/projects/york/bigcityread/city.html (actually this is a good book and a bit like cadfael) at least there was a reason whereas complete anarchy seems to be the reason this time

Thanks for sharing this with us Katy.

My neice is a police officer in Bristol and has had a few very hairy moments lately.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the wider police community as they do their utmost to try to control what is happening in our cities.
